What a Shopify Store Really Costs to Run

Shopify's pricing page shows the plan fee. That is rarely more than half of what you actually pay each month.
None of the rest is hidden exactly — it is just spread across places you do not see until you are running. Here is the full picture, so you can budget properly before committing.
The costs nobody mentions upfront
1. Payment processing
Every sale carries a processing fee, on every plan. This is usually the largest cost for a store doing real volume, and it scales directly with revenue.
The rate varies by country and plan. What matters for budgeting: at a few percent of revenue, a store turning over $20,000/month pays substantially more in processing than in plan fees.
The one to watch: if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of what your gateway charges. In regions where Shopify Payments is unavailable, this is unavoidable — but it should be in your numbers from the start.
2. Apps
This is where budgets quietly break. Each app is a monthly subscription, and stores accumulate them.
A fairly typical small store ends up with:
- Reviews app
- Email marketing
- SEO or redirect tool
- Currency or language app if selling internationally
- Loyalty or subscriptions, depending on the model
Individually each looks small. Together they often match or exceed the Shopify plan itself. Some also price by order volume, so the cost grows as you grow.
Worth knowing: several common app functions can be built into a theme once instead of rented monthly. Whether that is worth it depends on the app's price and how long you will run the store — a $30/month app is $1,080 over three years.
3. Theme
A premium theme is a one-off purchase, typically in the low hundreds of dollars. Free themes like Dawn are genuinely capable and fine to start with.
Custom design is a separate cost entirely and belongs in your build budget, not your running costs.
4. Domain
Small — roughly $10-20 a year — but worth buying somewhere you control rather than only through a platform, so moving is easy later.
5. Shipping and fulfilment
Not a Shopify cost, but it belongs in any honest calculation. Shipping software, packaging and the difference between what you charge and what you pay all affect margin more than your plan choice does.
Working out your own number
Rather than a generic estimate, calculate yours:
Monthly plan fee
+ (monthly revenue × processing rate)
+ sum of all app subscriptions
+ (domain ÷ 12)
+ any shipping software
= real monthly cost
Do this at your expected revenue, not your current one. Processing fees scale; plan fees do not. At higher volume a more expensive plan with a lower processing rate can cost less overall — that crossover is worth calculating rather than guessing.
Where the money usually leaks
Apps you installed and forgot
Audit Settings → Apps quarterly. Most stores are paying for at least one app nobody has opened in months. Uninstalling is free and immediate — and it usually makes the store faster too, since each app injects JavaScript.
Paying for a plan tier you do not need
Higher tiers mainly buy lower processing rates and more staff accounts. If your volume does not justify it, the lower tier is genuinely cheaper.
Using a third-party gateway unnecessarily
If Shopify Payments is available in your country and you are using something else out of habit, you are paying two sets of fees. Check whether the reason still applies.
Annual billing
Shopify discounts annual plans. If you are committed to the platform, paying yearly costs less than monthly. Only do this once you are past the point of switching.
What this means for a new store
A new store with low volume pays mostly plan fee and a couple of apps — a modest, predictable number.
The thing to plan for is that costs scale with revenue, mainly through processing and usage-priced apps. A store doing ten times the volume does not pay ten times the plan fee, but it does pay roughly ten times the processing. Model your economics at the revenue you are aiming for, not the revenue you have.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify more expensive than WooCommerce?
Different shape of cost. WooCommerce has no plan fee but you pay for hosting, security, maintenance and developer time when something breaks. Shopify bundles that into the subscription. For most small businesses without in-house technical staff, the bundled cost works out comparable — and far more predictable.
Do I need the expensive plan to look professional?
No. Customers cannot tell which plan you are on. The plan affects fees, staff accounts and reporting, not how the store looks.
When does Shopify Plus make sense?
At high volume, or when you need things standard Shopify cannot do — checkout customisation, complex B2B, multiple storefronts under one system. Below that it is a significant cost for capabilities you will not use.
Can I reduce processing fees?
Use Shopify Payments where available to avoid the extra transaction fee, and check whether a higher plan's lower rate beats its higher fee at your volume. Beyond that, the rates are the rates.
